My AI Policy
As Artificial Intelligence becomes increasingly integrated into our lives, I find it is important that therapists clarify how AI tools such as chatbots, generative AI, and note takers relate to their counseling practice.
I see therapy as a sacred endeavor. Therefore, I refrain from using AI as much as possible. This means that my session notes, treatment plans, resource lists, referrals, and all communication (emails, texts, calls, flyers, blog posts, etc.) are all created without AI.
This policy is informed by the following values:
Environmental Impact: While AI tools have to potential to be environmentally useful, most of our current data centers that power AI cause negative environmental effects such as noise pollution, water pollution, and loss of local wildlife. Avoiding AI use in my professional and personal life is one way that I show care for local ecosystems.
Ethics and Security in Clinical Practice: I aim to keep all client information as secure as possible. I believe that utilizing AI to record sessions, write clinical notes, or contact clients opens private information to unnecessary risk.
Preserving Cognitive Skills: I am deeply grateful for the privilege of my clinical training, and value the maintenance of these skills through consistent practice. I am honored to use my time to think deeply about my clients, reflect on our work together, and consider new paths forward.
